Funky days
What do you do on days where you're in a funk and can't shake it??

Go with the flow....and eat popcorn. Tomorrow is another day. Acknowledge you're feeling like this today, it's ok to have moments when everything isn't sunshine and roses. A bit of distraction from over thinking helps, a book, a film or a nap. Sometimes you just can't shake it for the moment. Try and give yourself a goal for tomorrow or a plan for something you'd like to work towards in the future. My personal favourite is just to get outdoors, sit outside and look at my surroundings. Notice the little things that are happening around us, taking a moment to take in all the things we overwise ignore in our daily lives. Watch the clouds, look at the birds, the cracks in the pavement, that ant scurrying about looking for food. And then I eat popcorn and binge watch Netflix. I'll feel better tomorrow and I've got plansπ

A few things have worked for me in the past:
Just accepting that it is a funky day, writing the day off and doing whatever the funk tells me to (within reason!). Saying to myself that tomorrow is a new day, perhaps making a plan for something I'll do tomorrow even if the funk hasn't lifted.
Taking myself away from the area in which I am funking. So for example, if I notice that I'm isolating myself in my bedroom, I will go and sit in the living room for a bit to get away from there and have a change of scenery. If I'm able to leave the house or even just step outside for a few minutes of walking about or looking at plants I'll do that, but that's not always possible for everyone.
Doing something new or different that I don't often do. For me this would be trying a craft or drawing a picture, watching a TV show or film that I wouldn't normally watch, listening to a new music album, cooking something if I have the energy. Or doing the total opposite and watching or eating things that have brought me comfort in the past. Just trying to do a few little things that might spark some joy and make me feel good for a few minutes/hours π

Sofa, blanket, snacks and binge watch somethingβ¦ Do it for the full day if needs be and as @onedayatatime says tomorrow is another day. Repeat as needed π

I'm going to be honest and say that I actually find it quite hard to "shake it" on those kinds of days. The most consistent method I've found though is removing yourself from whatever environment you are currently in. Usually means going outside I guess. Even if it's just into the garden for a bit if you have a garden.

I've hit rock bottom & am in a long lasting funk that I've been trying to shake off. My autopilot directs me to clean, so the places I can reach are spotless but I'm still deep in the fug, it obviously hasn't helped.

Hey @JessieJ, I've been there before. Sometimes I find that I need a leg-up from someone else to help me in those instances. Is there anyone around who could be that leg-up for you? Sometimes they don't even need to help me clean, just their presence gets me doing it.

Have you tried playing some funky music?

Hi @Jimm_Scope
No, I don't have anyone like that. In the end, it forced me to call my GP, now on antidepressants. Which is ok, but all my scripts have now gone to weekly, I know why, but that hasn't helped me. Heigh ho, such is life!

You have to pick up your prescriptions weekly? @JessieJ That seems like quite a pain!
Are they repeats? Have you tried some of these delivery services they now have? I pay the annual prescription certificate and am able to get all my medication delivered to me each month without having to pay anything extra on top of the certificate.

@JessieJ agree the cleaning one is definitely a thing. I've had to learn to let that slide a bit though because you reach a point of overdoing it and hurting yourself. A visitor commented that my house was 'immaculate' but believe me, it's all surface stuff! They'd no idea what was lurking behind this or under that π. Organising stuff is another one. I'm very partial to a storage box. But it's one of those things where you start pulling everything out, create chaos and then are too exhausted to continue. Can I ask if you have tried crafting of any kind? I've found journalling very helpful. I'm not talking pretty, lovely collage books, but a book to write, ramble, doodle, scratch and get your thoughts out? Some of mine are quite dark and miserable! They are very personal things, just for yourself and not meant to be works of art or anything like that. It's just a way to get things out and express what's going on right now, to yourself. They are interesting to look back on as well. I look at mine like ' mood books'. Mine are simple blank A5 sketchbooks and I just use a biro pen to jott things, draw and squiggle. They've definitely helped me a lot when in a long funk and trying to figure out what the blockage is that's stopping me from moving forward.

If I put all the mess in the cupboard under the stairs it technically no longer exists right? @onedayatatime π
I'm actually better about that now than I used to be.
I think the advice of trying to find a little craft or hobby is a good one. It's really about finding the one that *clicks* for you. If one doesn't help, try to not be disheartened, there are so many different hobbies and crafts out there to experience.

This is a great question and I'm enjoying reading everyone's replies. I have a long list of hobbies that I haven't done for a long time and I really should get back into them as they make me so happy. I have a piano downstairs that's gathering dust even though I love playing it! I think for me it's more getting into the habit of doing things. On funky days I tend to stay in my bedroom and watch things on my laptop. I know it's not healthy but it's hard to get out of it sometimes. Wish I could motivate myself to clean because I know that'd make me feel better!

It is a right pain, @Jimm_Scope, I was on monthly, but I finally owned up to the thoughts I'm having & the result was, less painkillers at home. Also, she thinks it will get me out more. ποΈ
@onedayatatime, I used to have several crafting hobbies, making jewellery from cutlery, card making, window designsβ¦ but I've long lost the ability to do them now. My cleaning is much like yours, looks good, if you don't look too close! I now have a robotic hoover, named Beryl, has googly eyes for entertainment value, you can see where she's been, but also where she hasn't, fits in well! π

@JessieJ Beryl sounds fantastic!!ππ I'm sorry you're unable to continue with your craft and hobbies, jewellery from cutlery sounds amazing! May I ask if you are able to use technology like your phone camera? You sound like someone who definitely has a creative eye. There's some great free apps which you can use on your phone to alter and experiment with your pics. While I'm rested up in bed, I'm using one called Snapseed. If I get any good results I might get them printed off by one of those companies online, they often have special offers on.
@Jimm_Scope 100% If it's out of sight it's definitely tidied! Just don't open any of my cupboard doors!!π
@Rachel_Scope a piano! How brilliant! I had piano lessons as a kid but got absolutely nowhere with it! Can't play a tune at all! Always fancied learning the drums though.
I think we all have such capabilities and as previously said, it's just about finding the one thing that clicks π We need to find our Mojo!!

@onedayatatime I had a drum kit at one point and learned a little but had to give them away as I needed to be an adult and I didn't have room for a drum kit π Have you seen the electronic ones? Much more compact

Beryl is handy, @onedayatatime, my postie was impressed! π Funny, I've been meaning to buy a small camera for ages, as the phone pics are never that good, especially for distance or sunsets, will get around to getting one when I have a little spare cash. Will look up Snapseed in the meantime, thank you for that.
@Rachel_Scope, I wonder what Dance with the Devil would sound like on an electronic drum kit. Cozy Powell, what a drummer!
