Potential new treatment for constipation brief survey

What research are we doing?

There are some initial promising findings from small studies using abdominal functional electrical stimulation (ABFES) to treat constipation in people with a neurological diagnoses.   ABFES involves placing electrodes over the abdominal area and using short pulses of electrical stimulation to produce a small contraction of your muscles.

People who have used the treatment report that it is easier and it takes less time to empty their bowels. They also say they are able to pass stools more often and more comfortably.  We would like to do a large study to find out whether the findings for some people are also true for other people.

Before we conduct a larger study, it is important that we understand more about constipation from someone who is experiencing it.  We would also like to hear about current treatments you are using. Do they work? How good are they? What would you change? It’s particularly important for us to find out what your thoughts are about our research ideas and if you would be interested in being involved.

Please get in touch if you have any questions about the survey.  Many thanks.
