hello everyone. I look after a friend, he has been getting ESA at the support rate for 8 years, he only deteriorates and is now 63, I have set up a PIP assessment for him next week. Will he have to go on UC, is there an upper limit to what he can receive, he now gets about 122£ a week and is not managing. he wont work again and is pretty much housebound. Will the PIP claim affect his ESA? thanks in advance for any info.....

Hello  and welcome, if your friend is successful in being awarded PIP,it will not affect his other benefits as they are not linked or connected in any way. Your friend will be awarded either the lower rate or the enhanced or a mix depending on how his health, disability conditions meet the PIP descriptors. After his acessment about a week phone DWP and request a copy of his acessment report which take about 14 days to arrive once requested, on receiving it you will, should be able to work out what the PIP award may should be but you still have to wait for the official award letter notification. If the report is not to your liking and miss reporting then having it before the award letter arrives allows you to prepare for a MR if you wish to go down this route if you think or believe that the award was wrong, good luck and keep posting.

PIP isn't awarded based on a diagnosis, but how your conditions affect your ability to carry out daily activities based on the PIP descriptors.

An ESA award won't have any affect on a PIP claim and the PIP claim isn't classed as a change of circumstances to prompt a move to UC.

A successful PIP claim can increase the amount of ESA you claim but this will totally depend on the persons circumstances, so yes in a way a PIP claim can affect the ESA claim but not in a bad way.
