I 'm obese and I wonder if my PIP application will be declined. I intend to apply because I have debilitating knee and back pain. I have congenital birth defects of knee tendons which caused maltracking and I only discovered this in my 40s when I discovered I have osteoarthritis in both knees and dehydrated lower lumbar spine. My knee consultant's letter is more than 3 years old and says I need surgery to correct it but to try physio as long as possible. I did that and it helped and I lost weight but due mental health issues I've put on a lot of weight in a short space of time and now I'm struggling to leave the house without help. I dread the stairs leaving my home, the walk to the station, the stairs to the platform, the step I have to take to get on the train, not getting a seat and the stairs and walk at the other end. It makes me so depressed and anxious. I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. It makes me cry every time I do the journey

PIP is based on the difficulties you have carrying out the prescribed activities to the required standard. The reason for those difficulties is not relevant.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Hello @officechick I'm sorry to hear about what you've been going through lately, have you had a chat with your GP about how things are impacting you? Could I ask if you're receiving any support for your mental health at the moment?

Let us know if we can help you any further.

Hi Alex, I have a GP telephone appointment on Monday. Hopefully I’ll be able to explain everything to the doctor and fingers crossed they’ll be understanding, practical and helpful. Part of the challenge is seeking help and taking care of myself. They don’t see people face to face unless they have to because of Covid and I think there’s a difficulty expressing myself properly. I think I’m a high functioning  depressed person so it’s very easy to go unnoticed at work.

Hi @officechick, how did the appointment go?

It's often very difficult to take care of ourselves and ask for help. We all like being independent and feeling in control. A good step towards asking for help more is acknowledging how hard it is, and knowing it's okay to feel that way. To me it sounds like you've got a really good understanding of yourself :)

Hi @officechick How did your doctors appointment go yesterday? Was your GP able to help you? Take care.

Hi, the doctor avoided agreeing to help with the application and instead said she would consult with the partners. She told me to return-refer myself for counselling (the counselling service says it takes up to 3 weeks to respond) and re-referring me to endochronologist. No help with knee surgeon as she’s focusing on my weight instead.

I meant re-refer not return refer

    Hi there

GPS very rarely support pip applications and 8f they do what they say isn't really relevant as they dint witness you doing the activities that are covered in pip things like bathing   dressing   cooking   toileting l, socialising,  finances

The best evidence is your own detailing how you function against the descriptors give 2 real examples for each task

I finally got the link to start a claim, after making follow up cals for 3 days. There was a problem receiving email from DWP on iPhone. I finally got through to someone who told me it’s a common problem and to go in via the desktop site if nothing is showing in inbox or spam/junk and it worked so I will complete an application this week and see what happens

Hi @officechick that's great to hear, good luck with your application.

Remember, if you're unsure of anything please do let us know, and keep us updated with how you get on.

Hopefully the counselling service and endochronologist can help as well :)
