Airers?

I've been reading a lot of money saving groups etc with people sharing ideas for saving money at the moment and over winter and was really confused that so many people shared the idea of buying an airer to dry clothes rather than a tumble drier.
Lots of people seemed to not have heard of them before or used one and it really surprised me. Are they not in common use any more??

I use one too, as I've never had a proper tumble drier. I assumed they were still in common use!0

I'd never be without one, in winter when my wood burner is lit I stand it in front and washing dries in no time.0

I have a clothes horse( an clothes airer) and I have always owned one, I also have an airing cupboard, which the clothes horse goes in, it dries clothes in no time, as the airing cupboard is very warm. I can’t imagine not using a clothes horse, as they are so handy to have.

I have a heated clothes airer bought from Dunelm and its fantastic 6 pence an hour, I use it for heaver items.
I also use a standard airer and tbh would be lost without them.0 -
Yes, I use them, infront of the radiators in winter, my dryer broke and never replaced it1

Yes I have a clothes maiden and hang my laundry on it if I can't hang them outside.
I'd love one one if the racks that you pull up to the ceiling but my rooms aren't high enough.0 -
Yes i use the 2 ive got all the time (none heated type).
Ive always called them clothes maidens .
They do get in the way but if it saves me some money ,then its a winner in my eyes.0 -
I have a 3 tier collapsible airer that I've used at least once a week for the last 7 years. It does take up a lot of space though, which might explain why many people don't have one nowadays. If I didn't use it I could fit a large shelving unit or cupboard in it's place which would help with my current lack of storage.
My Mum used to have a Z frame airer which was a terrible design...the lightest touch as you walk past and all the clean laundry would be on the floor!0 -
I use an airer too @Biblioklept even though I have a tumble drier, I only use that if desperate to help save on energy. The air works fine, it just takes a little longer!
I would also have assumed they're still in common use as well0
