Hi just wanted to know wether there is anyone who has been diagnosed with Monoplegia as Oliver may have this type of CP as we cant visully see any other problems only with his left leg.

I am also interested in any adults who have this type and how thye have got on in later life.

We have been told Oliver is a rare case as CP usually affects more than one limb, However is may have affected other parts but cant be seen viually or with reflex testing that has been done.

Would be grateful for any information as not heard of anyone with Monoplegia.

Thanks Tracy

    Hi Tracy
I have mild spastic diplegia, but as I only found out about my diagnosis this year aged 34, I've actually gone through my life thinking that I had a 'bad leg' as I only ever had problems with my left leg. I never thought for a minute that my right leg was affected as it has always had plenty of flexibility and movement. However after finding out that I was actually diagnosed at 3 days with CP I began to see a physio as I was also starting to experience pain iin both knees and hips. She informed me that although I have good flexibilty and movement in my right leg, it is still not as flexible as it should be and so therefore was affected by my CP, visually however you would not think that there was anything wrong with it at all. I also have a weakness throughout the whole left side of my body and my bones aren't as long or developed as my right side which makes me very slightly lop-sided.

All I can say is that if my right leg is stiff, you 'normal' people must be well flexible!!

    Hi Tracy

My younger sister has spastic monoplegia. It is rare but I thought she was the only one with this kind of spastic CP. She also has stiffness in her left leg. People with SM usually have a good prognosis for later life. It's a very mild form. How old is Oliver?

Hi! I am 18 and have monoplegia cp. I have never met anyone else with it, so it's kind of nice to be able to talk about with other people who can relate. I've lived alone for about a year now and I'm pretty happy with how it's going. Everyday activities can be a little challenging (especially hairdos or buttons!) but with practice you can usually find an alternative way to accomplish almost anything. I've found that the worst part of my cp is the frustration of not being able to do things I want without being uncomfortable (video games, nice hairstyles, holding hands, strength activities like rock climbing, etc.), oh and I'm also a little insecure about my appearance. It's not extremely noticeable, but if you look you can see it. My left arm doesn't straiten out all the way and is about 5 inches shorter than my right and my fingers are misshapen and kind of twisted. My left hand is a lot smaller than my right too. It almost looks like a child's hand. Other than that, it's not a huge issue. Basic nessecities can be done with one hand. I tend to use my left hand and arm mostly for stability (like a paper weight. Haha!) when I'm doing something like opening bread. Overall it's a little frustrating, but it doesn't stop me from living my life. I'm studying to become a nurse. I can paint. I am learning how to crochet. I've even learned how to curl my hair with a curling iron. There is definitely hope for a bright future, however I'm not sure how aging will affect it.
