Is anyone here into cars and driving? What is your favourite car?

As you may be able to tell from my account name they are my passion. I find it hard to explore this passion with my issues as I can’t go out alone and also can’t drive on most roads due to obsessive thoughts. But I still love to go out for a drive along the country lanes when someone can support me. My dream car is a Ford Mustang (60s one or new one, I’m easy :smile:) and I love to go to Mustang shows and look at other peoples’ cars. :smile: I also like any other classic car and really any car full stop. Have also done a track day in the past where I got to drive some classic cars on a track.

    Glad to hear you enjoy going out for drives on country lanes and you love Ford Mustangs, @66Mustang.  Your driving of classic cars sounds fab!  Did you enjoy it?  I don't drive now due to my pain, but I enjoy going out for a drive with my husband and I too love the country for driving as it's so much quieter than the towns and cities.  The last car that I drove was a Toyota Yaris and I had a couple of them which I found really good cars to drive.  My favourite car that I had was a Vauxhall Corsa which I loved as it was so comfy and I had all my girly bits in it, lol!  I have always fancied getting a Jeep or 4x4 as they look awesome, I think!  :smiley:

    It was really good fun and the instructors were very supportive which made the whole experience in my opinion, but it does make you appreciate really how good a modern car is, even little things that we now take for granted!

    I have not been in a Yaris or Corsa but I had heard the Yaris is good and that they are very very reliable. I always thought the Corsa looked good. I agree 4x4s look nice plus they are really nice to be a passenger in. Big and spacious and they usually have good suspension.

    I’m not sure if they are really proper “shows” or not but I like to go to these events where people park their classic cars up together and you can look around all the cars. Also I used to have a Mini Cooper which we took to Brooklands which was really good fun. Picture below of the queue to get in (all cars were Minis).

    They really are good events, even if you are not particularly into cars, the feedback from the people that came with me was that it was really interesting to see cars from their childhood or just from the past and people who are passionate about keeping them going!

    My dad loves Jaguars and has had a few during my lifetime!

    I hate traffic...that picture is one of my worst nightmares! :D  I've been stuck in traffic like that on a dual carriageway in panic with IBS issues more than once so stick to small roads wherever I can.  I also hate show entry queues so tend to wait until after the show starts to arrive lol.

    I like cars, but hate driving because of my conditions.  I do realise the irony of that!! I too try to get along to as many local static meets as I can over summer, but very few shows are close enough for me to get to.  I class a show as something organised where you have to pay for entry...a 'meet' is where a group get together in a carpark. :)  

    I don't really have a dream car as I know I'll never be able to afford one lol.  Sadly my health negates even having what I'd consider a 'nice' car.  I always feel very nauseous when I'm out and have a lot of 'lower end' issues from IBS that get aggregated by bumps and motion too. So I have to chose a car with a very smooth ride, which rules out anything sporty with low, stiff suspension or with big wheels. I also have to chose something with the cheapest possible running costs so it has to be a diesel (£30 tax a year, 55+mpg)...but they just don't sound or rev like petrol engines do!  :(  I know I'm lucky to own a car (even if it is old and battered!) but not being able to have a 'nice' one has a big impact on my socialising now.  The only socialising I was able to do was local outdoor events, which is mainly all car meets, but now I always feel out of place and can't really join in because of not owning anything interesting.  I still go to them but just walk around talking pictures and am rarely able to speak to anyone at all.  I've also drifted away from the few local car-mates I used to have around ~5 years ago so I don't hear from anyone my own age any more. 

    I've never done a track day as there aren't any local tracks and I know my stomach wouldn't cope anyway lol...but what was yours in out of interest?  Mustang? :D

    Thanks for sharing, OverlyAnxious! Like you I don’t have a flashy car and am just happy to have a car at all. I like to get pleasure from driving any car well as opposed to from what the car is. I’m fortunate to be living at home at the moment so I can spend some money on the car - if I ever had to live on my own I’d have to get rid of the car I think.

    That makes sense about “shows” and “meets”. I know what you mean about feeling out of place without having a “relevant” car of your own to show off but I think most people don’t mind if you have a car or not, and are just happy that others are interested in their cars!

    Yes my track day was a ‘60s Mustang as well as a few others!

    More boring car stuff but just sharing :smile:

    Had a track day at Lotus HQ in Norfolk at the weekend. I got to drive a Lotus Elise Sport 220. Only 220 horsepower but weighs under a tonne* so 0-60 in 4.2 seconds.

    I was very nervous, but the instructors were really nice. They calmed me down and made me feel at ease while driving the car.

    Had a tour of the factory.

    Sadly, strictly no pictures on site. They have secret prototypes there!

    But best part was at the end, going around the track with the professional (a Lotus test driver) at the wheel and me as the passenger. I never realised what a car could do, how fast you could take a corner, etc. We got up to 130mph I think on the straits but the most impressive part was the cornering speeds, going round them with the tyres screaming!

    I have always considered myself an OK driver but going around with the professional made me realise just how average I really am, at best!!

    Anyone who likes driving I urge you to do a track day, preferably one where the instructor also takes you around and shows you what the car can really do. Will be amazed!!

    *well it weighs 924kg so with fat old me in it it’s over a tonne :D:D:D

    Sounds like a cracking day. The Elise is a very good looking car but wouldn't be pretty for long once I got behind the wheel!
