Overcoming an eating disorder

Has anyone recovered from an eating disorder? I want to recover more than anything but I always end up giving in when I’m feeling any remotely negative emotion. What helped you to make the first steps? I have therapy and I’ve been an inpatient twice at a specialist eating disorders ward. It didn’t help me all that much unfortunately! I’m open to any suggestions as I’m desperate to make changes. I really want my life back.

Hi @EmilyMay and welcome to the community! I had anorexia 10 years ago, I never received therapy for this although I would have liked some support. Each person's recovery is different. For me, it was abuse and neglect that was the root cause of my eating disorder.

I was 14 at the time, I begged my Mum to take me out of the awful place I was in, and I wsnt to live with her and her her new partner at the time. I remember the morning after I arrived, i felt hungry for the first time in however long. Mum acted quickly and cooked me something to eat and i ate it all. It was a sausage sandwich I think.

Sorry I'm rambling, but after that I slowly built up my relationship with eating again, albeit it took months. Admittedly, to this day, i don't think I've completely recovered from it, but I'm definitely a lot better with food now than what I was.

Has therapy helped to find the cause or what triggered your eating disorder? You don't have to say, but by taking that away, that helped me so much.

Hope this helps in some way, always here if you need someone to talk to :)

Our daughter started with anorexia when she was 15, it took her about 6 years to fully recover and her weight has been steady and healthy for 11 years now. But it was an awful time for her and us, she spent ten weeks in a specialist private unit (which our GP arranged for the NHS to pay for cost £30,000) she then had 12 months of counselling and our then GP was brilliant seeing her every week for 2 years.
I won't lie it was a battle, I cried more tears than I thought possible, but she did come through in the end, when she was admitted she was down to 5 stone and we were told in no uncertain terms that we could lose her at any time and to be on stand-by to return to the unit at short notice.
Anyway, as for advice thats a difficult one, we were lucky that we had a great GP, she was lucky that she had our love and support, but I wish you well @EmilyMay and hope you come through this, I know it won't be easy for you and I wish you well. xx
