Hi There
My old Mum had a 'Saying' for everything and one to suit every occasion.
For instance.
What the eye can't see, the heart doesn't grieve over.
Pick up a knife someone else drops to bring you good luck.
We may not be rich, but we do see life.
Given knifes, or scissors as a gift will cut friendship. ( To break that you had to give them a little money in return)
There are many, many more that at the moment escape me.
I'm sure you people out there can add many others?

The second one about knives is interesting. I always was told if someone gives you a knife you have to give them a silver coin in return. Maybe that is along the same lines.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we may as well dance

If you give a wallet or purse as a gift always put some money in it.
Are you reading that newspaper you're sat on?
You will sit there until you've eaten all your tea.
Wait til your father gets home.

The devil makes work for idle hands ?
(one of my mums favourite sayings)“This is my simple religion. No need for temples. No need for complicated philosophy. Your own mind, your own heart is the temple. Your philosophy is simple kindness.”

In for a penny, in for a pound

The saying
That's Water under the bridge. ( Not sure if that's exactly correct )
But I always think, but it still comes out the other side. -
See a penny pick it up
all day long you’ll have good luck...touch wood ?
(supposed to be heads up when you see it)“This is my simple religion. No need for temples. No need for complicated philosophy. Your own mind, your own heart is the temple. Your philosophy is simple kindness.”

@woodbine
I know I shouldn’t to laugh but you have really cheered me up with the “wait till your father gets home” comment because I heard that so many times as a child ? -
@Dragonslayer
Money doesn’t grow on trees.
Do you think I am made of money?
Act as in haste, repent at leisure.
I don’t follow the Jones’ -
A stitch in time saves nine.
You made your bed, now you lay in it.
Anyone know how the one goes about turning the money in your pocket when there's a full moon?
Or looking after your pennys and they will turn into pounds?

Don’t sit so close to the telly as you will get Square eyes.
If you pull that face, your face will stay like that.
What time do you call this? -
Some of these bring back so many memories and I heart myself saying them to my son
Q Whats for tea mum
A Bread and Jam
Waste not want not
If you dont eat all your veg you cant have any pudding
Eat your crusts you will get curly hair, eat your carrots so you can see at night
Shut that door you were not born in a barn
Just a few I remember -
A watched kettle never boils
Time and time wait for no man
You can't make a cake without breaking eggs
No use crying over spilt milk
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Just a few more I remember. -
I know a few Yorkshire sayings as my family are from Yorkshire
If you put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig - if you have an item that’s not very good, it doesn’t matter how much you try to polish it or make it look nice
You were born with two ears and only one mouth for a reason - speaks for itself - you should listen more than you speakFur coat, no knickers - something that looks good but is fake and has no substance, or a person that shows off, especially wealth, but really isn’t that good/wealthy -
You can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear
monkey see monkey do
one swallow does not a summer make“This is my simple religion. No need for temples. No need for complicated philosophy. Your own mind, your own heart is the temple. Your philosophy is simple kindness.”

See that tree over there is money growing on it. Noooo.

@Dragonslayer - I remember, 'look after the pennies, & the pounds will look after themselves.'My Great Aunt used to say, 'every little helps as the old woman said as she tiddled in the sea.' Wondering if this actually was a saying, I looked it up, & it dates from 1590, but it was about a wren, & not quite so politely said, 'Everything helps, quoth the wren when she p***** into the sea.' I told my children my Great Aunt's version, & if I ever say 'every little helps...' they finish the saying off for me. I will have to teach my grandchildren, so it continues in usage for a few more hundred years!
