The thing people need to remember though and the trap that a lot of people are falling into is they think that this vaccine is going to be some magical, instant cure to the Covid virus. To be fair this is understandable though. The Covid vaccine will just prompt your body to build up antibodies to help you fight off the virus quicker just like the flu vaccine does it wont mean you are immune to it.

Covid can and does mutate and like the common cold or flu the vaccine will probably need to be altered every couple of years.

Whilst the vaccine should help stop the massive pandemic currently ongoing its highly likely, that like the common cold or flu viruses we will never totally be rid of Covid

I, for one, am well aware that the covid vaccine is not a cure, like the flu vaccine is not a cure.
You'll be amazed how many people aren't though @Ellestar and I think this is partly due to how the government has marketed the vaccine to the public.

Completely wrong IMO, the government are marketing this as a miracle cure, and it won't be... I've always said that Boris Johnson is a Clown who needs to lose his job sharpish.

Does anybody know when a mental illness is considered “severe”?

I don’t know if I have a condition that puts me higher up the list as it is rather vague for mental conditions and just says “severe mental illness”.

I don’t know if any of my mental illnesses are considered severe.

To be honest if I got Covid it won’t make any of my mental issues (significantly) worse or vice versa, so I don’t want to take a vaccine off someone who genuinely does need it sooner.
I saw something on this on the local news.  It's for things like Schizophrenia where the person may not be able to understand what's going on or control themselves fully (socially distancing, hand hygiene, remaining under quarantine etc).  Generally they'll be people in sheltered housing which also increases the risk of transmission.  I would consider one or two of my mental illnesses as severe, but not in a way that they'd make me a higher risk for Covid, it's poorly worded.

I have a very distant cousin on Mum's side who's Schizophrenic and lives in secure accommodation somewhere.

I agree they should but there's so much information flying around from various sources about Covid that rumours and incorrect assumptions were bound to be made. Sadly this is one of those situations where social media hasn't been that helpful either.

The amount of conspiracy theories out there alone is staggering. People are making wild claims about the vaccine altering your DNA, that the vaccine is just a way for the government to implant you with a tracking device, all sorts of things and some people simply choose to believe them.

A quick scan through Youtube will find you many posts where people are saying things like 'I cant wait to have my vaccine so I can go out and do blah blah because I cant catch it'. It's frightening.

It's a scary time for everyone and people like us who are even more vulnerable should we unfortunately contract it need do be even more vigilant than most.

Thats exactly the point I was making MrAllen. The government have marketed this vaccine as a miracle cure and this is why some people are assuming that once they have the vaccine they will be unaffected by Covid

I had my call yesterday offering me a vaccine I am only 68 so was a little surprised. I had it today at my doctors surgery and my wife who I was taking to the surgery for her diabetes check up hadn't had a call, bur asked if she could get hers as well while she was there. She got it and she is only 62. I do have some health issues, but not as much as most. There was a big queue for the health team organising it are doing a lot of people from the surrounding area. Not just those who are registered with the surgery. I am still finding it hard to walk and was escorted in and sent to the head of the queue and had it earlier than the time I was given.
A great deal of people waiting seemed to be even younger than me, so I don't understand how they do the selection. Get the vaccine if you are offered it, there are no problems with it.

I,m en east central Scotland and the government text me yesterday to say my vaccine will be available in the middle of February ...but they added that the vaccine will not stop me catching the virus and I must continue to wear a mask if I,m outdoors ( I have not been outdoors since last February ....and nobody comes into our house ) The family get us anything we need but they leave it at the front door?
A friend of ours ( she is 82) has been offered the vaccination next week and her second vaccine in April ....but another friend ( 86) has not been offered the vaccine as yet .
The government up here are having problems with logistics.???
