Hi! A friends relative is in receipt of PIP enhanced DLA and ESA,.(work related activity, disability income guarantee ) and severe disability allowance. Their father unexpectedly passed in January and he was in the process of selling his property. There was no will and now the property is classed as probate and will be left to my friends relative. The sale is still on course once probate has been sorted and when all debts have been paid the monies will be left to friends relative. Will the monies be classed as savings if friends relative uses it to buy a property to live in as shes done some research which suggests that it wouldn't. The guidance stated that the money could be kept in her account for up to six months as long as it's used to buy a property that she will live in and wouldn't be deemed as savings or impact her benefits if this was the only property she was to own. This was on the gov uk site and entitled to. I would be grateful for any insight into this, Kind regards, Kizzy

Hi @KizzyWinker and welcome to the community. Scope have some information about means-tested benefits and savings, if you click on the link and scroll down, there is a yellow box which explains about the sale of property. Hope this helps, if not then I'm sure members of the community will be able to answer your query :)

PIP would not be affected, as for ESA if its income related it could be, I say could because if you sell a house you own you can keep the money for 6 months without means tested benefits being affected, sometimes even longer.
However I'm not certain that this would be the case in this situation, a conversation with welfare rights might help.
