Has anyone had to wait for a backdate of the carer part of universal credit if so how long did it take for them to make a decision whether they can backdate it or not

There are no timescales but it can often take a few weeks. Unless the person caring reported the being a carer previously, it can be difficult to get this backdated.

Has your wife already declared to UC that she is a carer? If she has then the carer element should be backdated. If she has not then it is unlikely that UC will backdate it.

@AndrewHall it needs to be declared on her uc as change in circumstances as uc is totally seperate to pip application just putting it on the form isnt declaring it to uc

Should she wait until our son is awarded PIP before declaring it on her UC.  Thanks

She should declare it now because as advised, if she doesn't she will olnly be entitled to the carers element from the assessment period in which the changes were reported. Your son will need to be awarded daily living PIP.

If she hasn't previously declared that she cares she will struggle to get the carer element backdated even if your son is awarded PIP (although she can still ask).
