I wear hearing aids in both ears - Is there any assistance I can get to retrain?

I wonder if anybody can advise me. I wear hearing aids in both ears and don't get any benefits. I work and have worked at the same job 7 years which is in a call center. I have special equipment supplied by access to work some years ago. They revisited my place of work last year and the equipment I have is still the best for my situation, but, I'm really starting to struggle. I've just revisited the audiologist and my hearing aids are fine. Is there any assistance I can get to retrain for a job that is not phone based? Any advice welcome and will be appreciated. Thanks

Hello @Trudyq and welcome to the community.

Have you explained to your employer that you are currently struggling with the equipment you are using? While it may still be the best equipment for your needs if it is old it could need replacing.

As you have been working for a call centre for seven years you are likely to have excellent customer skills, this will go a long way in helping you to find another job which could be face to face. As part of your role do you input data onto a computer? If you do then you would probably cope with a data entry job. Yes it would be on a different system but in most cases you would probably pick it up quickly.

I am just thinking most roles I have done have involved some use of a phone, but in my current job while it part of the role it is one that could be taken away as part of the accommodation of your disability. As we use Skype and not phones internally you could the messaging facility rather than calling.

While these alone may not get you the type of job you want I wanted to point out you do have some important skills employers look for. The starting point though should be what type of job are interested in doing?

There are specialist organisations which help disabled people into work. Remploy has online advisers who can help you, as well as forums where you can ask questions http://www.remploy.co.uk The chat facility can be accessed without joining the community. Sadly because the online advisers tend to jump in and suggest people use the chat line there are very few replies to conversations and this tends to stop further conversation, however I understand the chat advisers are good. The initial chat box is small and people have difficulty using it, but the box can be expanded and the words made bigger.

As an individual I stood alone.
As a member of a group I did things.
As part of a community I helped to create change!
