Hi, advice please.we are a two person household looking to swap to a 3 bed with downstairs toilet. One person is disabled with mobility issues and would need a toilet commode in the spare room. Would this entitle us to the 3rd room for disability aid?

Hi @joanne177, welcome to the Scope community! I hope you're doing well and I hope we can find an answer to your question!
Can I ask, is this your own house or local authority housing? When you mention disability aid, is that about council tax reduction specifically or are you wonder if there's anything else you could also possibly be entitled to?
I'm just trying to narrow down the possibilities so we can find better advice for you
I'm also going to move this to our housing category so it's more visible.0 -
Am I correct in saying you live in social housing, eligible for 2 bedrooms, looking to move to a 3 bed property, and you are trying to find out if you could be exempt from the bedroom tax, due to needing a commode in the spare room?
I believe the answer is no unfortunately, you could try for a Discretionary Housing Payment but these are temporary and short term. You can apply again but even if successful once it doesn't mean you would subsequently be successful. The scheme is run locally and has a fixed budget each financial year.

Hello, no we are happy to pay for the spare room out of our money. It is housing association. Do you think she would qualify for the 3rd (under occupancy)
due to not being able to have it in her room. Due to migraines, allergic rhinitis and strong smells esp after it’s been cleaned.Thank you0 -
Ah I see.
Honestly I feel it is unlikely, but HA's can be more flexible about under occupying than councils (in my opinion), all you can do is ask, perhaps her GP might be able to write a letter of support?0
