Severe Disability Premium

Hello good people

I have recently become aware of severe disability premium and have been on dla since i can remember, which later on became PIP. I am in the process of claiming SDP and will also be backdating it.

My question is, is DWP legally obligated to tell me about this benefit as it has never been mentioned to me?

No, they are not because it's not a disability premium that's automatically paid because of the criteria involved. It's only paid if you either live alone, or treated as living alone and no one claims either carers allowance or carers element of Universal Credit for looking after you.

You must also be claiming either mid/high rate care DLA or PIP daily living or be registered blind.

Thank you for your reply and help, Yes I have always fitted the criteria but was never made aware of SDP.

You are not on your own unfortunately. Many have fallen into this particular crack.
As for the DWP advising you of the benefits and add on's that you may be entitled to - it won't happen.
The responsibility of finding out this information and indeed any information that would/may benefit you is you and yours alone.
