Son wants to move in, will my benefits be affected?

My 17 year old son wants to move in with me and my daughter as he is no happy living with his nan on his mother's side.  .  I will be getting a shared ownership flat with two bedrooms but and not working due to having some bad mental health problems I currently get PIP and UC and have been informed that the local council will pay the rent on the flat due to my condition..... But I was wondering if my son moving in could result in me losing my benefits as he is currently in full time education

You will not lose your benefits if he moves in with you. If his nan is claiming child benefit and/or any other benefits for him then she should report the changes and they will stop. Once she's done that you will then be able to claim child element of UC for him. 

As the flat only has 2 bedrooms, will there be enough of room for all of you?

Hi @benten, welcome to the community! I hope Poppy has answered your questions, though she raises a good point about whether 2 bedrooms are enough for all of you. You could inform the council and they could try looking for a property that has sufficient bedrooms maybe? I know it's often a long wait for housing these days but better earlier than later!

Also, your PIP is not means-tested so will not be affected. For Universal Credit, living with another adult who is not your partner could come under non-dependent, which could affect any housing element. However, someone does not become a non-dependent until 21.

In fact, if your son is still in eligible full-time education or training you could be entitled to more.

If your PIP includes the daily living and you’re claiming help with the rent there will be no non dependant deductions.

If renting your home from social/council and you have a spare bedroom which is affected by the bedroom tax you’ll no longer be affected by this.

If privately renting and there’s a shortfall of rent you’ll be entitled to an extra bedroom for your daughter.

If you’re claiming single person discount for council tax you will lose that. You will need to report the changes if she moves in.

You will also need to report the changes to UC.
