if I rent a 3 bedroom flat but only need two bedrooms will I still get the two bedroom housing rent? do I just need to puy the rest of the rent myself?

Hi @KatieG yes, unless you're sharing with someone to cover rent, or it's been agreed with your landlord, you'd need to pay full rent, even if you don't need all the rooms.

If privately renting and you’re entitled to 2 bedroom rate of local housing allowance then that’s what you will receive. You can have as many bedrooms as you want but you need to pay any shortfall of rent yourself.
If you live in social/council housing and you have spare bedrooms then you will be affected by the bedroom tax. This means there will be a reduction of 14% for 1 bedroom and 25% for 2 or more bedrooms.
