Regarding housing benefit.

hi I’m very confused and would like to see if someone could help me. So I claim housing benefit and old style ESA with SDP
I’m currently in the process of signing for a new tenancy for a new house. My house I live in at the moment is Leeds city council. The new house I’m moving to I bidded on through Leeds city council homes but it is a housing assignation property called Joseph’s housing trust. I’m very confused if I will have to change to UC or if I will just be able to transfer my housing benefit over to my new house. I’m not sure the meaning of local authority but it is in Leeds and through the Leeds city council. Does anyone know if I will have to claim uc or just be able to transfer it over ? Thank you ! X

Local Authority means "council" if you'll still be living in Leeds City Council then you can remain on HB and it will just be a change of circumstances form you'll need to fill in.

thank you so much, but the new house is through Leeds city council but it’s owned by housing association which when I’ve googled the housing association it says there based in York so Im a little worried that I’ll have to change to uc and be left without the amount I’m receiving now if that makes sense. Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate it a lot!

It's not where the housing association is based that counts. It's where you will be living that counts. If that's still in Leeds City Council area then your HB continues.

Hi @maiya2024, welcome to the Scope community 😊 Local Authority is just used because there are a few different types of local government these days. So the official term for every type of local government is 'Local Authority'. In your instance it is the Leeds City Council who run the metropolitan district of Leeds.
I'm glad we helped confirm for you that there won't be an issue as you are staying within the same local authority. I hope your move goes smoothly 🙂
You may want to check out our advice section on Housing to see if there's any other support available to you.
