Can I leave a 2 year contract early on medical grounds
I started work last year and signed a 2 year contract. The job is in a 24/7 CCTV monitored home for families at risk of losing their children. (I have seen babies taken from their parents, and heard of/seen horrific situations.
I live with RR MS, and the 3 shift rota (days/afters/nights) is causing Severe fatigue, and lost many nights sleep due to stress.
I have been on sick since September as the stress caused a major relapse, and many bouts of Optic Neuritus.
I don't feel I can physically or psychologically do the job, for both myself, and the families 😕
The business has a high staff turnover, and I have seen proof that ex employees, face substantial financial penalties. I'm scared to resign, as I can't afford to, but also can't afford to physically risk my health 😢

Discussing your health issues and requesting reasonable adjustments could help you avoid contractual penalties, especially if your resignation is due to medical reasons. Under the Equality Act 2010, if your health condition qualifies as a disability, your employer is legally required to make reasonable adjustments. If they fail to make adjustments, or if those adjustments do not help, you may be able to resign on medical grounds.
If you decide to resign due to health reasons, and you have medical evidence showing how your condition impacts your ability to work, your employer might waive or negotiate any penalties. This is particularly likely if continuing in the role would negatively affect your health.
I recommend seeking advice from ACAS, as they are well-positioned to guide you based on your specific contract and situation.
