When switch from esa to uc do you ask for advance payment through the online journal or when at jobcentre to confirm identity? And what is the amount usually for advance you can get

You can ask at the ID appointment but usually you apply through the online Journal.
The maximum amount is tied to the current amount of money that UC currently view you as entitled to, this changes as your claim updates with new amounts.
So at the beginning your available advance may be the Standard Allowance, but goes up as other elements are confirmed.
