Private renting and housing support

Hi all - hope someone can identify with my problem. My son has been living in Supported Living in Birmingham. The license ended last Friday and the lady who owns the house said he can stay in their under a private tenancy agreement. He has always claimed Housing Benefit. Can he still continue to receive housing benefit? I have also been told he would need to get the housing component of UC instead (so many variables!). I have also been told that he will need to migrate (again no invitation to migrate received). However, he hasn't migrated yet so I am worried he will lose his transitional protection if we just migrate ourselves. I was informed that if he received the severe disability component he would still get protection.

Has anyone else been in this frustration position. I have been continually on the phone for two weeks and still no conclusion.

Thank everyone for your help and support.

Usually if you are already claiming Housing Benefit and don't move outside of your current local authority area, you can continue to receive Housing Benefit.

Your son's situation is slightly different with the change from supported housing to a private tenancy, but I would have thought the same as above still applied.

Have you tried Shelter for advice?

Thank you Kimmy, appreciate your response - I have tried to get through to Shelter and CAB, but they are naturally extremely busy atm. I will continue to try and see if anyone else has any experiences related to this. Kindest regards.
