UC extra bedroom help

hi I’ve just been moved to UC on migration and have been awarded extra help for a bedroom, now for 2 years I’ve paid weekly a bedroom tax to my housing association.

Does this mean I don’t pay the bedroom tax anymore? It doesn’t cover the whole amount the additional help UC has given, it’s about half.

To confuse me further I’ve just received a direct debit later stating future payments I will have to make to the housing.

Any advice would be great

    Hi,

Bedroom tax works slightly differently with UC. There is a reduction of 14% on your Housing Element if you have a spare bedroom without any entitlement to it.

It does sound like UC have decided you are entitled to the extra bedroom based on their rules rather than the councils.

Have you received any UC statements so far?

I have extra bedroom if you don't mind me asking how much more are they charging you

    Thank you for responding.

Yes there is a statement on my UC it’s basically stating my full rent will be paid plus an additional £31 per month as I’m entitled to the extra bedroom under the UC rules.

The direct debit statement I received from my housing states that the payment of £14.98 pw will be ongoing for bedroom tax, this is why I’m so confused.

Surely the housing association will see the additional amount they are receiving on top of my rent?

I must admit I’ve been paying this £14.98pw for two years on ESA even though I have carers.

    Thank you in advance

I wouldn't recommend relying on your landlord to be proactive and notice the UC award etc.

Personally I'd speak to them giving details of your Housing Element award, then they can re calculate what if anything additional you need to pay via DD.

They aren’t the most effective housing association. Unless you owe them rent everything else is appalling
