edited March 11 in Universal Credit (UC)

I have been migrated to UC recently & was receiving housing benefit, my migration is complete, applied 11th Jan & received first payment. My question is why have the council paid the full rent payment & why did the UC not cancel it. I am worried about getting in debt from overpayments or who to contact. I am worried if I contact the wrong department my UC housing element will also be cancelled. To offer more information I received no 2 week run on, I received a full rent payment, then another in March. Thank you for your help

You would need to contact housing benefit at your local council, as it sounds like they didn't stop your payments after you claimed UC.

It's not down to UC to cancel your hb, it's down to local authority.

Thank you Kimmy, doesn't this normally happen automatically? When I contact them will they know it's not my fault? I'm worried they might cancel the UC credit housing element or my council tax. I just have zero faith in the system cuz they are always causing me great anxiety, you should know I guess & that is why you're here. Thank you so much

Yes normally it should be ended by your local authority after claiming, I'm not sure how much automation is involved though.

There is the possibility you can get the money written off as it was their error.

If not it shouldn't affect your UC Housing Element as it's your local authority you would owe money to.

Just one more thing, have you come across this before? Knowing it's happened before gives me more faith they will not make a mess of it, I want to be fully informed in case the person I speak to is not fully knowledgeable as I have had bad experiences before

Thanks Kimmy, I will go speak to them tomorrow face to face, I do not want to speak to a call centre as they always have high turnover & make mistakes. Thank you so much
