They're having a massive fraud crackdown just now and they've started with UC. Don't worry - you're not under suspicion, they're going through all claimants.
They're on the lookout for hidden capital and people who spend too much time out of the UK to maintain eligibility.
Some people are having to send pics of themselves standing outside their home addresses too!
So - yes a passport and you holding it up lets them check your face matches, current date, passport number they can check when you have been out of the UK, how long for, your home address, date of birth. It is a perfect document for them as it yields so much info.

Anisty is correct here @Palmtree125, you're not being singled out to do this. They are asking many claimants to do this kind of thing to prevent fraud and prove their identity is correct. It can feel really intrusive and a bit weird to be asked, but hopefully once it's all over they won't have to bother you about it again for a while 😊
