Help please! Sales tax for digital business

hello, I was wondering if there are any self employed people here who could advise as I seem to be going in circles. I am looking to sell digital products (pdf crochet patterns) and courses. I would like to sell via my own website but I am a bit confused about tax requirements if I do. From what I can work out, I believe the general uk vat rules apply for sales within the uk (don’t need to register to collect/pay vat unless over the £90k threshold) and for sales made to other territories you need to work out if you meet their threshold and register to collect as and when required. But I am doubting myself and I am struggling to find a clear answer online. Does this sound about right? And does anyone who is already running a e-product/e-service business have any pointers on how to make sure I am doing everything above board?

I hope the following website may be helpful as they have a lot of good free advice, e.g.: https://www.fsb.org.uk/resources/content-hubs/e-commerce

Unfortunately the hyperlink isn't showing, so please copy the above into your browser.

Yes, sorry, scope has been really helpful in trying to figure out how to access self employment with health issues so I was hoping that it was ok to speak to others trying to figure out self employment on here. Happy for admins to delete if posts should be more strictly disability related, I am just struggling to find any information online for anyone who is looking to build slowly rather than aiming for large and rapid growth and this was the only place I could think of where people might get it.

If you don't get your answer through the links, post again as my daughter runs an online sales business selling UK and overseas so she is au fait with all this.

I'm afraid this isn't my area of expertise, but I just wanted to pop in to say that you're welcome to ask these kinds of questions on the community. We're a community united by disability and we're happy to see discussions on any topic, it doesn't always have to be directly about disability.

I hope you can find the answers you're looking for @kellyb2104, best of luck with your business too 😊
