My son is a self employed joiner, however after an operation on his Right hand he has been told that he should not return to work untill after Christmas! This means he will have no income for the next 5 months! Is there an allowance he can claim to tide him over?

Hi @Rabsdad, that's a tough one, sorry to hear that your son isn't able to work at the moment. Is he expected to make a full recovery?

It may be worth him looking into ESA if he's eligible. It can take a while to set up but might help him get through the next few months:

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA): Overview - GOV.UK

You could also look into whether there are any grants or funds from the local council. They can sometimes provide extra money if things are tough.

Did your son have any kind of insurance? If so, it's worth seeing if he's covered for injury or illness.

Hope you can find some solutions soon.
