Are you claiming UC as a couple?
He will need to go through the Work Capability Assessment process and be found to have Limited Capability for Work Related Activity (LCWRA) to be removed from any work commitments.
Unfortunately receiving PIP has no impact on the UC WCA process.
I'd recommend reaching out to a local welfare rights organisation for advice and support.
While undergoing a WCA the work coach does have discretion to turn off commitments, some are more reasonable than others about this.
