🌿 Housing & Independent Living: Co-Designing Our Forever Home Together
Hello, fellow members,
I'm reaching out to connect with like-minded individuals passionate about creating a sustainable, accessible, and community-driven living space. Imagine a place where we co-design our homes and share resources like a hydrotherapy pool, art therapy centre, gym, restaurant, and even a farmers’ market. A space where we support each other in daily life and thrive together.
Beyond our personal homes, I'm inspired by the idea of developing holiday facilities tailored for disabled individuals and their families. This could serve as both a sanctuary for rest and a means to fund and sustain our community.
Seeking Inspiration: Disability-Led Communities That Shine
To guide our vision, I'm looking for examples of disability-led communities that are not only successful but also beautiful and deeply inclusive. One such example is The Kelsey Ayer Station in San José, California. Opened in April 2024, it offers 115 deeply affordable, accessible, and inclusive units, with 25% reserved for people with disabilities. enterprisecommunity.org
Another inspiring model is Villa de Vida in Poway, California. This community is entirely composed of residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), fostering an environment where differences are celebrated, not just accommodated. Villa de Vida, Inc.
In Queensland, Australia, Accessible Homes Australia has developed Urraween Village. This independent living project features 12 single-level, two-bedroom villas equipped with assistive technologies, a magnesium pool with a hoist, a rehabilitation gym, and a sensory garden. Courier Mail
Let's Collaborate
If you're interested in co-designing a space that prioritizes accessibility, community, and sustainability, I'd love to hear from you. Together, we can create a model that not only meets our needs but also serves as a beacon for others seeking similar solutions.
Looking forward to connecting and building something meaningful together.
Warm regards,
M
