Black Friday or Buy Nothing Day?

Black Friday takes place on the last Friday of November and is the start of the Christmas shopping season where lots of shops will have big sales to tempt you to part with your cash!

Buy Nothing day takes place on the exact same day and aims to be a 'detox from consumerism'. It's a day to consider the environmental impact of our shopping and think about how much we consume.

Which one will you be celebrating and why?

This is interesting! I had never heard of Buy Nothing Day before

I am guilty of a bit of Black Friday shopping and seeing if there are any bargains on things that I've had my eye on throughout the year!

    Buy Nothing

I'm going to try and buy nothing this week! I'm also trying to buy most of what I need second hand including Christmas presents if I can manage it.

I feel like Black Friday can be good if you've been wanting to buy something for a while. But it does encourage people to buy things they don't need and sometimes the prices aren't much better than usual.

I checked the usual black Friday deals on the boutique blu ray companies I use and thought the slate was poor this year, I don't ever tend to buy anything from normal places or normal items.

besides they lower prices a few weeks before then ramp them, then lower them again but not as low and convince you it's a bargain

Interesting discussion, let me admit I am ambivalent about this in general. I am very much opposed to Black Friday as it lures people into buying more things than they need.

On the other hand… my partner has Amazon Prime to watch movies which means we don't have to pay shipping when we order things. So with no disability allowance who am I kidding? I do understand the importance of local book stores, but am not gonna buy a book there for twice the price I can get it at Amazon.
But when last February the people at Google Maps decided to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America I was livid.

So I am always in limbo. Not liking those big tech companies and feeling small I cannot locally source the few things I cherish. Currently I am using Duckduckgo instead of Google to search things, but apart from that we don't have much of a choice, do we? I wish I could cancel my Gmail, but you won't see me sending smoke signals instead.
