Housing element renting from sibling
Advice urgently needed. I have been struggling to afford my privare rented house. My sister has a room at her house she has previously rented out which is now empty. I have been asked to move in but we have read i wouldnt be able to claim housing element as i would be living in the same house as her. Our stepdad who used to rent houses out has said he could act as property manager (setting up a new company) so the rent payments would go through his company. Is this possible? Or even legal? He has a different surname to us but i have been registered as living at the same address as him in the early 00's

Removed, incorrect advice.

Im guessing it would be contrived as the company for the rent payments to be paid to would be a new company created just for the purpose of paying the rent. Also me and my sister would be living together and she owns the house

I agree the arrangement with your stepdad would be contrived.

Ive heard housing element cant be paid if me and my sister live in the same house. Would u.c know my sister owns the house if we go via the company? Just weighing all my options up before deciding to move in. Dont want to break the law and the planned set up is making me feel uneasy

I definitely wouldn't go anywhere near a contrived set up.
Yes you are correct if living with close family you can't get Housing Element.
I'll edit my posts.

Could you not pay your sister rent for the room? Maybe she would charge you less than market rate.
