Hello, I am new to this group and desperately seeking some advice. I have a son Au/ADHD who was awarded PIP from 9yrs age - having a diagnosis of Autism. He and the family have struggled with life - as he needs extensive support. At 36, he recently had an additional diagnosis of ADHD - which made sense of his struggles and difficulties. He has recently been turned down for PIP (despite him needing constant support) with the assessor stating 'he is not eligible because he can drive (Familiar routes only!). They have totally dismissed all his other problems (unable to cook a meal safely, manage instructions and time, only work a limited number of days, maintaining daily needs such as laundry, hygiene, appointments etc - the list goes on). I cannot believe he was awarded 0 points at every stage. His original diagnosis is Aspergers - and to the outsider he presents as capable. However, he is not and needs significant amount of prompting and support (his behaviour can also present danger to himself and others - eg. forgetting he put a pan on a hob etc). His limited ability to work is a result of high anxiety, shutdowns and periods of depression and high stress. Now, in his thirties he needs help and support with housing - an award of PIP would help open doors of support for appropriate housing. Has anyone been, or is, in a similar situation? I would love to know if I can challenge these PIP decisions - has anyone succeeded? Thank you. My caring thoughts to you all
