Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some advice and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through a similar situation.
My partner and I are planning to move into a privately rented one-bedroom flat in Croydon, with rent of £1,550 per month.
My partner currently receives Universal Credit with LCWRA and PIP. Her father is her official DWP appointee and currently manages her benefit claim.
When we move in together, we'll need to report the change in circumstances, link our existing UC accounts and establish a joint Universal Credit claim. I'll also be working part-time (16 hours per week).
I have a few questions about the process:
- Housing costs: How straightforward was it to get your rent verified and the housing element added to your Universal Credit claim after moving into a private rental?
- Delays: Did anyone experience long delays getting their housing costs approved? If so, how long did it take, and did you have to repeatedly chase DWP?
- Joint claims: Has anyone moved in with a partner who was already receiving UC and had to change to a joint claim? Was the process straightforward, or did it cause payment interruptions?
- Existing LCWRA: If one partner already has an LCWRA award, did it carry over without needing another Work Capability Assessment?
- Two-bedroom LHA rate: This is something we're particularly interested in. Although we're renting a one-bedroom flat, my partner has disability-related difficulties sharing a bed with me because of her physical conditions. She sometimes needs to sleep separately due to pain and discomfort. Has anyone successfully received the two-bedroom Local Housing Allowance rate under the disability rules for couples who cannot reasonably share a bedroom? What evidence did DWP require?
- Croydon specifically: Has anyone recently dealt with Croydon DWP or moved into private rented accommodation in Croydon while claiming UC? Were there any particular difficulties?
We're trying to prepare everything before moving so that we don't end up in a situation where we're responsible for £1,550 rent but are waiting weeks or months for the housing element to be processed.
I'd really appreciate hearing about both positive and negative experiences, especially from people who have gone through a similar move.
Thank you!
