Football

Hi all,
I hope that everyone is keeping well in these uncertain times. I wondered if it would please be ok if I were to start a conversation around football. I am a massive football fan and one thing that I enjoy doing during my free time, obviously prior to lockdown, is going to different football stadiums and watching games. I enjoy watching football from all of the leagues and the atmosphere created. There are many things about football that I personally disagree with, such as how much they are paid, however the strategic element of the game really interests me. I am just wondering what other people thought of football. Please do share your thoughts. Thank you.

But as much as I love English footie, there's something about international games that captures my imagination. Forget all the fuss about not being able to complete the season, I'm devastated that Euro 2020's been postponed. There's only so many tournaments in a lifetime after all!

A football thread would be fantastic.

Thank you for your thoughts, I know that getting to watch games on TV, particularly perm games, is expensive and agree many families quite rightly prioritise other things. As @wheelchairWonderland said after all of this has passed maybe there will be a greater emphasis on the fans and all that we bring to the game and this may include making it easier for fans to watch from home. That is another reason for me that the FA cup is the best domestic competition as not only does it give teams in the lower leagues the chance to play some of the bigger teams but some games are broadcast on the BBC. Another Arsenal fan, cool, what do you make of Mikel Arteta? I know, I too am quite sad about the Euro's, who would have been your tip to win it this year? Thank you
Thank you for your thoughts. Please my I ask what is the best World Cup game that you have watched? Also, you say your hubby is a big fan, please may I ask if there is a particular team he supports? Thank you.
I'm pleased you have joined the conversation and thank you for your thoughts. I agree that when this is over there will be a lot of reflection on what fans bring to the beautiful game and how it may be made easier for viewing at home. Also, let's hope transfer fees are reconsidered as some of them, in my opinion, are extremely expensive. Please may I ask what other sports do you enjoy watching? Thank you.
How are you? Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it nice to know there is someone else who sleeps, eats and breathes football
Who is your favourite ever player to play for England?
Difficult question as there are many but for me it would have to be the legendary …
Bobby Moore
Obviously slightly bias being a West Ham fan but he was, in my opinion, a quality player and great leader.
Thank you

Liverpool fan- great choice. I love the way Liverpool play under Jurgen Klopp, what a manager! How are you feeling about the current situation with the league, what would you prefer to see happen? Have you been to Anfield? Wow you met Lennox Lewis, that must of been quite something to watch him fight in New York and Las Vegas? Also, good choice in Gascoigne
I think they should try to find a way to finish the season. That would be fair for everybody.

I'm not entirely sure about Arteta to be honest. But I think there's so much dead wood in the squad that it's not fair to judge any manager that comes in until there's been a proper rebuild. What about you?
I think France would have been there or thereabouts, but their form in qualifying was a bit patchy. Other than that, Germany? Are Italy ever anyone's pick? Who would've been your dark horse?

This is a really good thread which has got a lot of people contributing so well done!
None club related memory being in Spain in 2010 when they won the world cup was a madness

Flores looks like a good talent. I try not to get too excited about the youth products coming up, but I can't help it with the current batch (Smith Rowe, Nketiah etc.)

I definitely agree about the FA Cup. Not to harp on with cliches, but there was always something simultaneously accessible but prestigious about it.

Hi @Adrian_Scope,
Completely agree with what you have said about the FA cup and Arsenal have quite good form in it too
How are you? Thank you for joining, all ways good to know there is another avid football fan out there! Ipswich, great choice, if I remember correctly a West Ham kid by the name of Freddie Sears came to play for you and is still with you now, what do you make of him as a player? Thank you.
Hi @WestHam06, thank you for your response. I hope you are well. Re the World Cup, I enjoy a lot of the matches with France, Germany, Spain competing as they seem really good teams from what I can see with my limited knowledge of football! However, the matches that I have always followed have been the Scotland v England matches even although often it has been very painful to watch us Scots being defeated, lol! My hubby is a big Celtic fan so I'm a bit more genned up now about football since meeting him!

Hi @Ails,
How are you? I am good thank you, thanks for asking. Firstly, thank you for your kind words, I can't take credit for setting this thread up, it was @wheelchairWonderland idea, they just asked me for some help getting a conversation going.
Really like your choice in International teams, all three that you mention play good football just in different ways. Scotland have got some good players in the ranks, Andy Robertson who @Richard_Scope will know well as he is Liverpool's left back and a quality defender. Also, there's Scott McTominay who plays in midfield for Man United so the future looks promising
Great question, my best footballing memory as a West Ham fan was our last game at the Boleyn when we beat Man United 3-2, quality game with lots of memories as we bid farewell to home. Winston Reid got the winner, brilliant night! Another good footballing memory was Boxing day 2018, I went to Maidenhead vs Aldershot and the score was 4-3. Great atmosphere, great game! Thank you.

Completely agree, Vieira was world class, so dedicated and solid in midfield. I don't think that many footballers play like they used too, with dedication and passion. In my opinion, nowadays it's all about money and player power. I remember as a youngster watching Vieira and Keane getting a little to involved and though I completely disagree with some of their actions, both showed a passion and willingness to do the best for their respective clubs. As a West Ham fan, Mark Noble is an absolute legend, he is not the best footballer in the world but their is a passion and determination to do his best for the Irons and he is extremely loyal. It does help that he is a West Ham fan himself. Thank you.
No problem, please may I ask who is yours's and your husband's favourite player for Celtic? I like Scott Brown, Thank you.
Completely agree, so good to meet other female football fans. I went to the Ladies FA Cup Final last year, fortunately for me it was West Ham ladies, and they played Man City ladies. Though we lost, it was good to see so many fans, both ladies and gentlemen, at the game. Thank you.
Hi @WestHam06 and it's nice to speak to you again. I don't have a favourite player although I did really like Hendrik Laarson when he played for Celtic and my claim to fame is that I used to receive treatment from the ex Celtic physiotherapist as he has his own private practice. I think that my husband likes Scott Brown too as he mentions him a lot.

I wouldn't have Pogba even if he was gift-wrapped.

Hope you are both well. Completely agree about the Viera and Keane rivalry, classic to watch but they were both such quality players. I'd take Mark Noble every time over Paul Pogba

To be fair, I think I would take Mark Noble over most of the so called 'real talents', though I do acknowledge Messi is pure class. Here's a question for everyone:
'Who do you think is the better footballer, Messi or Ronaldo?'
For me it would have to be Messi, I just think he is the more natural. Thank you.

On a serious note, I think VAR has morphed from what people were originally talking about when they wanted video assistance. I remember being all for it, but in a way I'm starting to miss the little bits of controversy that VAR has all but washed away.
Bundesliga was odd. It didn't feel quite real, as if I was watching a training ground game or playing those pre-match challenges on FIFA. It was the same with the Juventus v Inter match back at the start of March. The fans give the game gravitas and urgency. Without them it's just a bunch of very wealthy blokes in shorts and long socks chasing each other around.

Hope you are all well. Just wondering what people thought of sharing their predictions of scores of any matches which are of interest to you. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thank you.
Definitely not an easy game to return to. I too think it will be a close game and I'll be cheering the Gunners on! Thank you.
