Enhanced Mobility and PTSD

Ive scored 12 points for planning and following a journey, But it states I cant follow a familiar journey without another person and assistance dog or an orientation aid? I do have to attend hospital appointment alone but have to use sat-nav and check the route ahead, Im always too early as I leave at a ridiculous time before I need too. I stated all this in my Mandatory reconsideration, but now Im scared.

Hiya 😊 sorry I'm a bit confused? You say you have already been given 12 points for planning and following a journey? Do you mean that's what you have been awarded already or what you think you should be awarded?

Hi Emily, Ive just been awarded it. Just read the letter and noticed this.

Ok so can I just ask why you are worried?  If you have been awarded enhanced mobility that's a good thing? 😊👍

Im confused as I do have to drive alone sometimes though, and I don't know what an orientation aid means? Im scared incase I get caught driving alone when I shouldn't?

Do you think you should not have it?

Did you do mandatory reconsideration to get more points? Sorry trying to figure out what's happened 👍

Ok for some reason I had commented before you replied so it's all getting confused now so sorry!
So you have been awarded enhanced rate mobility after doing a mandatory reconsideration? And you are now thinking maybe you aren't entitled to it right? Or you are concerned they will catch you driving alone is that how it is all the time? I mean did you tell them you can't go out alone sometimes?

Did you happen to tell them it's makes you very unwell/anxious etc if you go out? And you depend on sat nav etc? 😊

Oh I'm horrendous I have panic attacks and then I can get angry I mainly have my teenage daughter with me.
  • Emilyb81Emilyb81 Member Posts: 394 Pioneering
There you go 👍😊 so that's why because you are mostly unable to go out without help and get very distressed etc that's why you have been awarded those points? So it's ok hun? I am not exactly sure about the percentage but they say it only has to be most of the time I believe not all? Because people all have good and bad days but overall it's probably negative for you to travel? So I'm sure you have nothing to worry about hun! 😎

Ive been award it till 2031 Im just scared of getting a car on Motorbility and then losing it.

I am not an expert on any of this stuff sorry hun but I really don't think you need to worry because like I said before they look at your life overall and the majority of the time you are not able to do appointments alone etc? I can't say how they check or if they check on people but I presume even if worst case scenario happened you would just have to tell them why you were alone? But I am just guessing I haven't heard of this situation on here before? If they awarded you the money and for 10 years it really isn't likely you don't need it or aren't entitled to it? 👍😊 It's great you had such a positive outcome with your MR ☀️

Your award is based on how you are on the majority of days.

True I’m just so pessimistic. When things are going right something always messes up so that why I’m double checking everything, suppose the trust issues are part of my condition.

But I’d still like to know what an orientation aid is exactly

The correct wording of descriptor 1f. is "Cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person, an assistance dog or an orientation aid."

Seems there's either been a typo in your award letter or you've misread it.

Orientation aid = A specialist aid designed to assist disabled people to follow a route safely
Orientation aids are specialist aids. Ordinary satellite navigation systems such as those found in mobile phones do not count as specialist. Maps or lists of directions do not count as specialist. A long cane (as used by person with sight impairment) is an example of a specialist orientation aid (NB – a symbol cane, which is used to signal to others the person has some sight impairment, is not an orientation aid as it does not actually help the person orient themselves).

You haven’t scored on orientation aid. You’ve scored on without another person.

But I did state to them that I do sometimes have to travel alone to Hospital appointments?
  • Emilyb81Emilyb81 Member Posts: 394 Pioneering
    It doesn't matter hun?
  • Emilyb81Emilyb81 Member Posts: 394 Pioneering
Honestly as long as you told them your truth that's all that matters xx

Just found my MR I sent in, it quotes the following...

" I tend to avoid people. I never walk anywhere I always use my car as its my safety bubble, I only use pay at the pump or send someone in to pay for petrol as this causes me anxiety"

    AND...

PLANNING AND FOLLOWING A JOURNEY: (previously a 4)

I clearly stated this on the call, I have great anxiety especially on my own hence why I have to have someone with me. I cannot get public transport, I have a car as I feel too anxious and I get distressed that other people stare at me. If there is a change of a route I can’t manage because of my difficulties. For example, last week I set off to go to a Hospital appointment but because there was a diversion, I panicked and started to cry and shout, I just gave up and went home again. I get very anxious about going places I don't know on my own. I need help to remember when to leave. Even with help, I’m so worried about being late I’m often too early and then get very stressed, my child cant come to my hospital appointments due to Covid and this makes me worse. I didn't go for my Covid vaccination last week as I couldn’t face it and was in so much pain, even though I need it.

And since this I've had 5 heart related operations in 5 weeks, being in ICU and hospital for 5 weeks and at deaths door has really made my PTSD far worse x
  • calcotticalcotti Member Posts: 2,125 Pioneering
All of which appears to explain the award of 12 points on the grounds that you cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person (taking into account that the test is what you can do on the majority of days and the need to do it to an acceptable standard etc.)
