Hi. I was awarded PIP last month after the change in law meant I scored enough to be awarded it. The law change goes back to 2016. I was assessed in December 2016, so will it get backdated to then?
Also, will ESA Severe Disability Premium get backdated to 2016 too?

What PIP award have you been given?0

You said you were awarded PIP last month but then asked will it be backdated to 2016, didn't you receive the decision letter? Was this a new claim for PIP or was a it review of an existing award?Which ESA does you claim? New style ESA, the old Contributions based or Income Related?Does anyone claim Carers allowance or carers element of Universal Credit for looking after you?And do you live with any adults?0

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/personal-independence-payment-changes/social-support-changes-to-pip-law-from-6-april-2016If we decide that you should get more PIP, then your award will usually be backdated to 6 April 2016. If you claimed PIP after 6 April 2016, it will usually be backdated to the date you started getting PIP.
As poppy says, your decision letter should state clearly what date the award starts from.
If you receive income based ESA, live alone (or any other adults in your household also get a disability benefit) and no one claims Carer’s Allowance or the carer element of UC for looking after you then you will be entitled to the SDP in the ESA which will be backdated to the date the PIP award starts from.

It was a review of a previously denied claim for PIP from 2016 or 2019, not sure which one it was as they never stated. The award letter states that it starts from the date the decision was made, which was the end of January, but shouldn't it be backdated?I'm not sure what New Style ESA is, but I've been receiving income based ESA since 2015.I live on my own and no one receives carers allowance for me0

You will need to ring PIP to ask them because they are the only ones that can tell you.Based on the information you've given then yes you will qualify for SDP and you need to ring ESA to ask to fill in the form to claim it. It can be done over the phone.0
