Carers allowance claim

I’ve put in a claim for carers allowance for my mother as she got no one else to help her on her daily living so could I have a claim even though I claim PIP myself for my mental health?

You can get CA as well as PIP.

Do you claim any other benefits?

Does your mother claim any benefits? If so do any of them include a Severe Disability Premium. If so she will lose the SDP if you claim CA.

Yes, but what other benefits does she claim? Does she claim ESA or pension credit? If she lives alone then she maybe claiming the Severe disability Premium as mentioned here...

If she does and you claim CA for looking after her then she will lose the SDP which is £67.30 per week. That's a lot of money to lose.

What other benefits if any do you claim?

Thanks. Then she won't be claiming the SDP.

When you claim UC you don't need to claim Carers Allowance, you can claim the carers element without claiming the CA. The carers allowance will be deducted in full from any UC entitlement.

However, does your UC include the LCWRA element for yourself? If it does then you can't be paid both the carers element and the LCWRA element at the same time.

If it doesn’t then you can “report a change of circumstances” tell them that you care for her for at least 35 hours per week and your UC will increase by £163 per month.

Then you don't need to claim Carers allowance because you won't be financially better off. The only advantages would be that CA pays class 1 NI credits and UC pays class 3. CA can also be paid weekly, so could help you to budget better.

To add further about the LCWRA if your health condition limits your capability to work you can report a change of circumstances and report your health condition and send in fit notes from your GP. If found to have LCWRA then you would receive extra money from the 4th month after the health condition was reported.
