i have been on sick now over a year, i am 64 years old with severe nasal polyps. nose completely blocked. had an appointment today at job center, i said my fit note does not run out until may . they said you will need to come in weekly  even though your handing fit notes in. i said whats the point im not looking for work until i have my operation. she said you will still have to come in,

When you claim UC you’re classed as a job seeker until a decision on a work capability assessment says otherwise. 

It’s a work coaches discretion whether they reduce or turn off work commitments. Some do and others don’t. If you don’t do what’s required you could be sanctioned.
