Just been to Sainsbury’s and they have lots of veggies for sale really cheap.

500g carrots £0.19 down from £0.49
2kg potatoes £0.15 down from £1.15
500g parsnips £0.19 down from not sure
500g sprouts £0.19 down from £0.99

and more

I suspect they are making a loss on this but are hoping it will help people to be able to eat well over Christmas.

Just posting in case it helps someone.

    I've frozen chopped up swede & prepped parsnips before without blanching them first & they were fine. Just make sure you suck all the air from the bag as you tie it. It's good to make use of foodie bargains as long as you have freezer space. ;)

    @woodbine

    If I am wrong in my assumption then I share your view that why can't they do it all year but my assumption is they are making a loss, which is of course not sustainable indefinitely. There is fierce competition between supermarkets, they make efforts to beat each other even by one penny on many items. If they could afford to do it all year one of them would already be doing so which would force the others to copy.

    Of course it is probably way more complicated than that...might be a "loss leader" i.e. they get people in for cheap veggies hoping they are lazy and buy their meat and other stuff there as well, and overall make a profit!
