hello, I’m pretty sure I’m autistic, I have had the first stage assessment and waiting for the second stage adult assessment. I’m in need of some counselling but there doesn’t seem to be any for people unless they’ve had their diagnosis. I need a counsellor who understands autistic traits. Does anyone know of such a service?

    Hi @fnd_fibro_ed,

Are you looking for private counsellors or hoping to get some sessions on the NHS? The National Autistic Society have a service directory with some autism-friendly counsellors, perhaps you could see if there's anyone in your area who might suit you. Most of these are private counsellors, so I'd totally understand if that's not an option for you.

I think many services will be aware of how long it takes to get diagnosed at the moment, so if you find something that you think might be suitable it could be worth getting in touch with them to see if they'd see you without a diagnosis.

Has your GP been helpful at all? Sometimes they can help refer you or point you in the direction of some specialist services. Hopefully some of our members will be able to offer some advice too 😊

hello, thanks for the reply. I’ve tried the nhs talk therapy service which my gp recommended but found the initial assessment quite difficult, as in getting the person to understand me. They mentioned relate but they charge £45 for 1/2 hr.
