PIP & College Accommodation

Hi guys,

Our daughter has finally found her ideal college course, and has been accepted - only thing is, she will need to have college accommodation as its 2.5hours away from home.

The campus is ideal as everything is on site, and x2 meals per day are provided.

We will continue to support her, over the phone multiple times a day, opposed to in person. (safety issues relating to distractions & concentration & forgetfulness mainly)

All of her pip income will go towards this. Is that OK? And also would we need to make pip aware of her being at college and her accommodation?

If her pip isn't able to go towards this then I don't see that she can do the course as we wouldn't be able to afford it, but it's the one course that offers everything she needs.

Hi @Ashandley85, welcome to Scope 😊

That sounds like a positive step for your daughter, I hope it's something you can go forward with.

What level of study is your daughter's course? I'm not all too familiar with this area of PIP, but residential colleges can sometimes affect entitlement to PIP. Although again, I'm no expert on this, and that term may refer to something completely different! I'll put your post over into our PIP section where our lovely members can find it and offer their advice and expertise. I hope that's okay with you and you can get some clarity on things.

PIP can be used for anything she wants to use it for. It won’t be affected just because she’s going to Uni.

Will she be applying for a student loan?
There’s also a Disabled Student Allowance that she can apply for. https://www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowance-dsa
