16 July: Ketchup originally a medicine?: cool things I learnt today
So today I’m not feeling so I’m gonna keep this short and sweet.
In the 1830s ketchup was marketed as a medicine that could help diarrhoea, indigestion and jaundice
Dr John Cook Bennett invented it
He did it in the form of pills (idk how, sounds suspicious )
tomato is acidic so likely made these problems worse (if no effect at all)
This stopped in the 1850’s (Thank g-d!)
now it is a delicious condiment for chips 🍟 ( a much better use if you ask me )
Whoever came up with using it as a condiment in my opinion is either a genius or crazy.
People do use milkshakes as a condiment for chips so I guess anything can happen!
