Universal credit notice

I got my UC notice yesterday. I have a self injury behaviour of hurting my eyes when stressed. I am due to have an operation in the next few months, a corneal teansplant as my vision is just so damaged from the behaviour.

DWP is one of the main triggers. If I hurt my eyes after the operation then I am in serious trouble and may go blind.

Does anyone know if you can delay the move to UC for a long period? I know you can delay month at a time but this is not enough for me and will still cause such distress. Thanks for your help.

If it is in the best interests of the claimant and for safeguarding reasons, it is possible to request a notice be cancelled, or the claim window extended.

However they do not need to agree and there is no appeal proceedure if they do not agree. For this reason if you think having the notice cancelled is in your best interest, find an advisor to help you apply for this.

Keep in mind if you do have it cancelled, you will eventually need to transfer across anyway. If you find yourself needing to claim due to a change in circumstances, cancelling the notice will mean you are not eligible for transitional protection.

In most cases it is actually more beneficial for a claimant to make the change rather than have the notice cancelled, so long as they do so with support. Citizen's Advice Help to Claim service would be a good match for you, and they would also be able to help with cancelling the notice if that is what is needed.
