Advice about Employment Support Allowance

Hi everyone

I am new to the community. I am currently on ESA long term and in the support group as I am mentally ill. I was wondering if i could ask advice about inheritance and what if anything i can do.

The reason i am asking is my mother has gone into palliative care and i have started thinking about what will happen later on further down the line when my father dies. Their house will be left to me my brother and my sister and divided equally between us.

With ESA I think they will close my claim if i inherit money or property. Is there any way I can get the money protected to stop my claim getting closed. I think i might have to get my father to change the will to leave my share to my brother instead of me. I think if i spend the money immediately on a property (small flat for example) then i could live in it and still get ESA. I am currently in a housing association flat.

At the moment its a really stressful time with my mother being so poorly.

If anyone can offer advice that would be great.

Thanks

Crystal

Hey @Crystal66, welcome to the community, I hope we can help get you the information you need. I'm sorry to hear about your mum, I hope everything goes as well as it can.

Inheritance and benefits can be a complex subject and also a more difficult topic to tackle given what else you are going through when it becomes a real concern. We have an advice page to try and help people inform themselves and find out how to navigate these circumstances, you can read it here: Inheritance and benefits | Disability charity Scope UK
