Under 35 1 bed rate pip

Hi all,

Im currently feeling pretty anxious as I have just signed a new tenancy for £1000 as I cannot love in a shared house. I was told that I am eligible for the 1 bed rate of UC Housing Element as i receive Daily living from PIP. Ive just received a message in my journal saying that due to my age I will only get the shared rate, I'm 22. I have informed them that I receive PIP. Is this correct that I'm not eligible for the 1 bed rate??

Thanks in advance ❤️

If this is privately rented and you live alone then yes you’ll be entitled to 1 bedroom rate of LHA. https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/benefits/benefits_for_under_35s_in_shared_housing

You can see the LHA rates here https://lha-direct.voa.gov.uk/

    Hi Thanks for your response.

This is what I thought and was advised by CAB. It is a private rent property. Im really worried they're going to try to do all they can to ensure I don't get the 1 bed rate but that could be my anxiety. My PIPis currently waiting for review, would that change anything do you know? I've asked my mum to help me give them a call tomorrow if I dont get a response in the journal.

Thanks for your help I hope this can get sorted easily.

It took me a while to get the council to understand this when I first got PIP and was on Housing Benefit. I think it's a fairly unusual situation so many advisors just don't know about it. I did eventually get it so I'm sure you'll find someone at UC that understands it eventually.

Interestingly, it wasn't questioned at all when I migrated to UC from ESA & Housing Benefit. Just immediately showed as the 1 bed rate. 🙂

I have just checked under the understand housing amount it says "Shared accommodation rate

This is based on the rent for a single room in a shared house for someone under 35 in your area. You cannot be paid more than this amount.

Go to your local council's website to check the shared accommodation rate in your area."

Im not sure if this is because I'm currently on the SAR.

Thanks for your reply! I'm glad you were able to get it sorted in the end. Im hoping this will get sorted quick!

For housing element of UC you are entitled to the 1 bedroom rate. Please see link I posted above.

    Hi All,

Thanks for your support. I've heard back today and they have agreed I will get the 1 bed rate. It seems very obvious they hope people don't know what they should be able to receive to stop people claiming what they're entitled to. Thanks again to everyone on here who helped to put my mind at ease and helped me to advocate for myself ❤️

I'm so glad you've had good news @yoohyeoniee. It is sad that we have to fight for what we're entitled to but I'm happy you found help here😊
