Hi my friends dear little boy has been awarded high rate mobility his mum really needs a car for him but she rang mobility yesterday to explain their are a family of 6 and can't afford the AP on the larger cars.

The lady she spoke to at mobility told her the car would only be there to use for school runs and hospital appointments for her son, my friend said what about if they all need to go away together on holiday and mobilitys response was the car isn't there for holidays 😑.

Has my friend just spoken to a lady who is having an of day or is the information correct?.

I would really appreciate some advise for her please, Thank you.

The car can only be used for the needs of the disabled person.

As long as they are going on the holiday, that shouldn't be a problem.

However, they shouldn't be using the car only to take the other kids to places. I know that sounds harsh but it is meant for the disabled person only, not just for Motability but also because of the free road tax class.

Motability car use needs to be for his benefit, either he is in the car being driven somewhere/en route to picking him up, or the journey is for something on his behalf like parent picking up his prescription while he's at school.

It isn't for a day to day general use family car.

If one of his siblings needed something, then it would be inappropriate use of the car.

Although a holiday would clearly be for his benefit, driving everyone else there and back isn't.

I'm inclined to side with Motability on this one.

thank you both for your replies it just seems strange that is OK to drive little one on holiday but would be best to leave his brothers and sisters at home.

The problem I see here is that a larger 7 seater is needed due to the size of the family so help with the AP is needed. Motability will only take into consideration the needs of the disabled person, not other members of the family.

    I agree with motability here.

That is, if a disabled person is accompanied by more than one person helping the disabled person while traveling in a car, is this a violation? What law?
