Carers Allowance time scales.

I used to claim carers allowance for my son, but stopped the claim when I moved to work after being widowed 8 years ago.
I am struggling with juggling work and caring and as I am in a better place financially, I have decided to reduce my work hours and claim carers allowance.
I am trying to budget for this and wonder if anyone knows roughly how long it takes to be awarded? Thank you.

Anything up to about 12 weeks. Are you claiming any other benefits, if so which ones please?

Thank you Poppy, no I'm not eligible. Its just me and my adult son. I have a small private pension payment but nothing else apart from part time employment.
