MRI scan this morning, am I overthinking ?

afternoon all!
I have suffered with lower back pain for 5-6 years. Progessively getting worse, I get stuck when standing up like something is being nipped in my spine it’s like an electric shock feeling, I have weakness in my right leg, urine incontence, pain in right bum cheek. And constant throbbing in my lower back. I can’t sit or stand in same position for longe then 20 minutes.
anyways ! I have finally been referred for a mri scan. Had it this morning. When it was finished the technician had to help me up as I can raise my legs when lying flat for the pain. He said “how long have you been like this?” I replied and told him he seemed shocked. Then said to me “you should take vitamin D, it’s good for bones” I replied saying I do, aswell as b12 and other supplements . He then asked what painkillers take. I told him codeine paracetamol. Then he said my Dr will have the results on his system now to give them a call Monday.
what on earth where his comments about? Do you think something has been found or am I overthinking ? As I am a nightmare for reading to much into things!
thankyou in advance :)

Good Evening Bagheera93,
I wouldn't worry too much, I have had several MRI scans and your scan will be looked at by a radiologist who has special training in interpreting MRI scans, so you may not get the results immediately. The radiologist will send the results to the doctor who arranged your scan to discuss them with you.
Sometimes it can be several days but the old adage is 'no news is good news'. I have waited up to six weeks before now. The comments the radiologist made may have just been chit chat as he will not be aware of your medical history. So chin up.

hi rimmy, thanks for you’re reply. It’s good to speak to someone who’s had one before.
so will my scan be sent to radiologist then sent to the MSK Doctor who referred me ?
yes that’s what I’m thinking was he just making chit chat to take my mind off the pain!0 -
I think you have severe spinal stenosis, I had the same sort of symptoms and woke up one morning unable to move my legs. They operated and it gave me some relief for a few months. I have started to get worse again due to scoliosis and have been diagnosed with multiple types of stenosis. It’s a horrible thing to have and my thoughts are with you.

thankyou for your reply, are my symptoms very similar to yours? When I have researched my symptoms it comes up with so many conditions it could be. Was yours confirmed with mri?

I forgot to mention I am 32 email and I do have a slight curve at the bottom of my spine I’ve been told in the past when having a epidural in labor and being examined by my gp when attending with my lower back pain

hi @bagheera93 , I’m truly sorry to hear about your struggle with lower back pain.I know how difficult it must be. I can see that the radiographer’s comment has sparked your curiosity (I have also felt the same ), but it’s important to remember that radiographers aren’t in a position to discuss potential findings. The best thing to do is wait to hear directly from your referring consultant.
In the meantime, try to avoid Dr. Google and well-meaning but unofficial diagnoses, as they can add to your anxiety. Stick with your prescribed pain relief/heat packs/physio prescribed exercises etc , keep mobile as much as you can tolerate, prioritise safety/falls & injury prevention & risks (avoiding bending twisting lifting etc )and take things one step at a time.
I was in your exact position 16 years ago, so I truly understand how you’re feeling. Wishing you all the best, and I hope you get the clarity and support you need soon.0 -
thankyou so much ☺️ this means a lot

Yes that's the way it works. If there is anything serious the MSK doctor contact you. Hope all is well and not serious.

You are definitely not overthinking it its an awful experience you can ask doctors to do anything on me apart from a MRI scan or an general ansethic or operation

this was my first time having a mri. And I can’t say it was pleasent. I start panicking when I seen how closed in it was near me face. With every click and bang I kept thinking “please be finished”

just a little update !
I called the MSK secretary this morning. She was not happy to say the least.
she said she had 4 other patients who must have had the same technician as me, because they called up this morning asking for their results aswell.
she said he should not be advising that at all.
I did say to her I wondered this .. and she profusely apologized and that she would be ringing the radiography department to tell them this. She told me first the scan is done, Then goes to a consultant to look at, Then the report to the MSK Dr who I seen who ordered the scan. It will also be sent to my plans put on my NHS app.
It will be marked either urgent and I will get an
app in 1-2 weeks. Or non urgent for 4-6 weeks review with MSK.0 -
I have a app on the 24th :) it’s a 10 minute review appointment so I think it’s quite likely nothing has been seen on the scan
