Volunteering while on ESA in support group

Hi there,
I’ve recently signed up for volunteering with a reading charity to help primary school kids with reading. It’s all done online. Twice a week, 30 minute sessions and runs for 6 weeks. I KNOW I need to inform DWP but I am finding it impossible to get through on the phone. My volunteering starts in a couple of days. I am in a quandary about what to do. I don’t want to let the charity down by cancelling but I also don’t want to end up being in trouble for not reporting before I start.
Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this?

The best thing to do is write to them.
Put national insurance number on the letter and get proof of postage.

thanks for replying. Writing would have been a next step i suppose. Fortunately I managed to get through to them today. 2 calls totalling 3 and a half hours on hold. I spoke to someone for about 5 minutes and it’s all sorted. I can now look forward to volunteering tomorrow instead of worrying about getting into trouble!
