Need carer support

hi, so I’m a wheelchair user who requires some help and care a lot of times. For my entire life, my mum has been my carer. Now that I’m going to university and moving away (my own choice) I now would require an actual carer rather than my mum. I’ve never had to cope with receiving that help from someone who isn’t my mum. I’m honestly terrified like I have anxiety and am autistic too so I know it’s a big change and I have no idea how different it will feel and will it be awkward and things like that? I don’t know anyone in real life that can give me advice on having that carer support, so I’m hoping someone can give me some tips on here.

    Hi @N826

Congratulations on getting into University! What are you studying? It sounds like a big change so it's understandable why you may be feeling anxious.

Being clear with your carer about what you’re comfortable with and how you like things done can really help make things smoother. It’s okay to take things at your own pace and speak up when something doesn’t feel right! Do you know who your carer is? If so, have had a chance to speak to them yet?

Most Uni's also have a disabled student service and they may be really useful to reach out to as well as they’re there to support you and help make sure your needs are met😄
