Pension, Carers and extra room.
I received some brilliant advice from your site a couple of years ago when I did battle against the DWP so I hope you can help me now. If I have put this in the wrong discussion then please accept my apologies.
My wife and I are both pensioners and we own our own flat. I get the full pension and my wife gets £700 a month. We came off universal credit a couple of months ago when I reached 65. My wife suffers from Stills disease and I suffer from Primary Progressive MS and will soon be unable to access our first floor flat so I took part of my private pension as a lump some in order to buy another flat. We have unfortunately suffered some problems within the family that has left us unable to move at the moment.
This has left us with £30.000 in savings. I received the higher rate of PIP for both mobility and living. I have looked at what might be available and I have found that my wife could get careers allowance and even if she didn't get help financially still apply because she could get underlying entitlement and this could help us access other benefits.
Could I also ask for advice about getting our council tax reduced since I need a room for myself. We live in a two bedroom flat and I suffer badly from emotional liability meaning I need somewhere to calm down, does that mean I can apply to our local council to drop a band.
So thank you in advance for any help I get.
Cheers
Ian

I can't help with everything, seems like a horrible situation seeing as of course you can't just put the money back in the pension
Carer's allowance - doesn't matter how much savings you have. It's affected by income but a pension does not count as income, so if the pension is her only income I think she should get it if she's your carer
Someone might correct me
